My rats are my companions before anything else. I breed with care, science, and heart — focusing on genetics, health, and temperament above all. Every doe gets the rest and recovery she deserves, every baby is raised with respect for their natural development, and every rat I breed always has a home here for life.
At Daisy Fields Rattery, ethics and evidence go hand in hand. My approach blends the latest understanding of rat behavior and genetics with a deep respect for each animal as an individual.
Why Genetics Come First
Temperament is not random — it is strongly influenced by heritable traits. While environment and handling can shape how a rat expresses its personality, the foundation is set before birth through careful selection of breeding pairs.
By prioritizing genetic temperament, we reduce the risk of producing animals whose personalities might shift unpredictably as they mature.
Line Breeding & Outcrosses
We rely on thoughtful line breeding to preserve the stable temperaments, health, and type that our lines are known for. When needed, we introduce careful outcrosses to bring in new genetic diversity while maintaining our core qualities.
As part of our commitment to genetic progress, we also work with newer genes and varieties, dedicating time to improving their health and temperament.
Innovative Temperament Testing
We believe in finding creative ways to test for genetic fearfulness and aggression, especially when these traits are triggered by specific situations. By introducing controlled, safe scenarios that mimic potential stressors, we can identify and address inherited temperament issues early.
This helps ensure that only confident, adaptable, and people-friendly rats are carried forward in our breeding program.
Observation Before Intervention
During the first three weeks, our focus is on monitoring development and mother–pup bonding without unnecessary disturbance. This allows each pup's natural tendencies to emerge without overwhelming them during a critical growth phase.
Between weeks three and five, we begin structured, positive human interaction tailored to each pup's comfort level — nurturing and enhancing the confidence and sociability already present.
Health and Welfare of Our Does
Our breeding does are valued companions, not production animals. We strictly limit each doe to a maximum of two to three litters in her lifetime, with substantial breaks between litters to allow for full recovery — physically and mentally.
Retired does remain with us or are placed in loving, permanent homes.
Lifelong Support
When you adopt from us, you gain more than a pet — you gain a lifelong mentorship. We are here to offer guidance on care, training, and health throughout your rat's life, and always take back any rat we have bred, at any stage of life, for any reason.
No rat from our lines will ever be without a safe place to call home.
Biosecurity
We operate as a closed rattery to protect our rats from preventable illness. All interactions with potential adopters are conducted virtually, and updates on litters are provided through photos, videos, and written reports.
